# Extending MySQL Capabilities with UDFs, Plugins and Components

**[Planet MySQL](https://daily.dev/sources/planet-mysql)** · 5 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

MySQL provides three mechanisms for extending SQL capabilities: legacy User Defined Functions (UDFs), the Server Plugin API, and the modern Component architecture. Using a UUIDv() function as a practical example, the post walks through implementing the same functionality with all three approaches in C, highlighting key differences in registration, boilerplate, and API design. A notable technical detail is the type mismatch between `char *` (UDF/Plugin) and `unsigned char *` (Component) for `is_null` and `error` parameters, which causes compiler errors if copied naively between implementations. Components are the forward-looking approach in MySQL 8.0+, offering versioned services and loose coupling, while UDFs remain the most portable and plugins are best for deep server subsystem hooks.
