Extortionists ‘carpet bomb’ South African internet hosts

A criminal group calling itself 'Black Matter' is conducting a DDoS extortion campaign against South African web hosting companies. The attacks, which started last Friday, use a 'carpet bomb' technique flooding every IP address a target owns with small data packets via botnets. Peak attack traffic reached 676Gbit/s on one host. Ransom demands of 2.5 monero (~R16,000) were sent to at least three hosting clients, with a 15-minute warning before attacks began. Affected companies include 1-grid, Xneelo, Domains.co.za, and Liquid Intelligent Technologies. None of the targeted companies have paid. Traffic from attacked clients is being routed to a London scrubbing service to filter malicious packets.
