# Extremely One Line

**[The Daily WTF](https://daily.dev/sources/thedailywtf)** · 2 min read · 9 upvotes · 2 comments

## Summary

A humorous look at a code snippet from an old ASP.NET application where the entire Page_PreInit function is crammed onto a single line despite Visual Studio's built-in autoformatting tendencies. The code also sniffs the user agent string for 'Safari' and sets a mysterious 'uplevel' ClientTarget value, a pattern repeated across multiple pages in the codebase. The piece pokes fun at unclear naming, string-based flags, and browser sniffing as bad coding practices.

> I have seen this exact pattern before: the whole PreInit crammed onto one line because the autoformatter kept undoing the formatting, and someone gave up fighting it. This is just an old application doing old application things. The single line is a symptom rather than the crime. I have never once seen a ClientTarget set on the basis of a user agent turn out to be a good idea in the long run. Naming the flag uplevel would have helped whoever read it next, but only a little.
