# F2FS Adds Opt-In Multi-Grain Timestamps With Linux 7.4, Other Improvements

**[Phoronix](https://daily.dev/sources/phoronix)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

F2FS gains opt-in multi-grain timestamps and other improvements merged for Linux 7.4. The file-system now has a dedicated metadata cache that moves meta, node, and compress blocks out of the VFS page cache, removing the page-equals-block-size assumption for metadata and paving the way for large folio and page-not-equal-block support in the future. Multigrain timestamps mix coarse and fine-grained timestamps for use-cases like enhancing NFS cache coherency without hurting performance, and EXT4, Btrfs, and XFS already support them. The update also adds bio entry-count throttling for async write completion, exposes a resizable_tail feature via sysfs, and fixes race conditions in compression, mmap write faults, checkpoint/shutdown, and filesystem freeze, while preventing GC holes on sequential zoned devices.

## Questions this post answers

### What new feature does F2FS get in Linux 7.4?

F2FS adds opt-in support for multigrain timestamps in Linux 7.4, matching a feature already available in EXT4, Btrfs, and XFS. Multigrain timestamps mix coarse and fine-grained timestamps to improve NFS cache coherency without hurting performance. The release also introduces a dedicated metadata cache infrastructure and dynamic on-disk block layout parameterization.

### How does the new F2FS metadata cache help with large folio support?

The metadata cache moves meta, node, and compress blocks out of the VFS page cache, removing the assumption that page size equals block size for metadata. Combined with dynamic block layout descriptions, this change paves the way for future support of large folios and configurations where page size differs from block size.
