Children's advocacy groups Fairplay and the National Center on Sexual Exploitation have filed a complaint with the FTC asking it to investigate Roblox for 'unfair and deceptive' design and marketing practices. The complaint alleges Roblox misleads the public about platform safety and pressures young users to spend money. Roblox disputes the claims, citing its age-verification system built on facial estimation via Persona. However, that system has been undermined by a secondary market in pre-verified accounts sold on eBay. The FTC complaint adds to over 140 existing federal lawsuits and separate state attorney general actions against Roblox over child safety failures, as well as international regulatory scrutiny from the UK's Ofcom.
