The FBI has issued a public service announcement warning that cryptocurrency investment scammers (pig butchering/romance baiting) are now dispatching physical couriers to collect cash from victims. After legitimate financial institutions block suspicious transfers, scammers arrange in-person pickups at victims' homes or public locations, using a dollar bill serial number or password to authenticate the courier. Victims are shown fake wallet gains and then pressured for more cash under the guise of taxes and penalties. The FBI advises people to research crypto platforms, avoid sharing home addresses with strangers, and report incidents to ic3.gov. U.S. victims lost $8.6 billion to investment scams in 2024 alone.
