# Feature Flags don't always need a Backend

## Summary

Frontend feature flags can improve developer velocity for UI experiments, staged rollouts, and beta testing without backend dependencies. vue-feature-gates is a lightweight Vue 3 plugin that provides type-safe feature management with Pinia persistence, allowing flags to survive page refreshes. The approach works well for UI experiments, A/B testing, hiding in-progress features, and decoupled deployments where code ships before feature activation.

## Content

Most of us are used to managing Feature Flags on the backend. It’s the standard for security-heavy toggles or database-driven logic. But when it comes to UI/UX experimentation, staged rollouts of new components, or beta-testing specific views, doing it purely on the frontend can be a game-changer for developer velocity.

That’s why I’m **excited** to share a new package I’ve been working on: **vue-feature-gates**.

## What is vue-feature-gates?

It’s a lightweight, type-safe plugin for Vue 3 designed to make feature management seamless. While many tools reset your flags on every page refresh, I wanted something more robust.

### Key Highlights:

✅ Pinia Persistence: The standout feature. Your feature flags are persisted via Pinia, meaning if a user (or an admin) toggles a feature, it stays active even after a hard refresh. No more "reset-to-default" frustration.

✅ Lightweight & Fast: Built specifically for the Vue ecosystem without the overhead of heavy enterprise platforms.

✅ Developer Experience: Simple API to check for "gates" throughout your components.

### Why manage flags on the Front?

While backend flags are great for "kill switches," frontend management excels in:

• UI Experiments & A/B Testing: Quickly toggle between different layouts or components without waiting for API updates.

• "Under Construction" Modes: Hide new features from production users while keeping them visible for your QA team.
• Decoupled Deployments: Release the code today, activate the visibility whenever you're ready.

• Client-side Logic: Handle features that depend on local state or user preferences.
If you are building with Vue 3 and Pinia, I’d love for you to give it a try!

Feedback, stars, and PRs are more than welcome!

Thank for reading and let’s make feature management in Vue easier together. 🚀
