# Fibrous Muscles For Humanoid Robotics

**[Hackaday](https://daily.dev/sources/hackaday)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Researchers have developed Electrofluidic Fiber Muscles, a new type of actuator for humanoid robotics. Unlike traditional motor-and-gearbox systems, these actuators use electrofluidic pressure — a small high-voltage current drives a pressure gradient through a tube — to shorten muscle strands in a way that mimics biological flexor and extensor mechanics. The pressure pump can be wound around the fibers themselves, creating a compact package. The technology shows more promise than previous pressurized actuation approaches but is not yet available for hobbyist use.
