# Figma wants to be your IDE, and the PRD, too

## Summary

Figma's Config event in India pushed the idea that design canvases should be where software gets built, not just sketched. Code layers moved to open beta across all plans, letting users import prototypes from GitHub, local folders, a Chrome extension or Figma's MCP server and iterate with an AI agent. Specs, a new multiplayer Markdown container for PRDs and specs, entered open beta and can be read by coding agents like Codex over MCP. Payload, Figma's acquired headless CMS, is now wired into Figma Make, auto-provisioning databases, storage, login and admin panels for prompted apps. Figma's chief design officer noted code output grew 17x while releases grew only 1.3x, suggesting most AI-generated code is exploration rather than shipped product. A separate engineering writeup describes building a Figma-to-code agent loop using a design-system MCP catalog, Code Connect bindings, import-blocking hooks and pixel-diff checks with retries, cutting prototyping time from about an hour to ten minutes. Figma's MCP server also gained 20 new integrations including OpenCode, Dia, Junie and Meta Muse.

## Content

Figma's pitch at its first Config in India is blunt: design, code, content and agents all live on one canvas now. Whether developers want a design tool to be their backend is the open question.

The most telling number came from Figma's chief design officer: code output has grown 17x while releases grew only 1.3x. That is a polite way of saying AI is producing a mountain of exploration and very little shipped product. Figma's answer is to give that exploration a home, not to slow it down.

## What actually shipped

- **Code layers** are in open beta after a private beta since June. You can import prototypes from GitHub, local folders, a Chrome extension that captures live sites, or the MCP server, then iterate on them with an agent. It uses AI credits, but it's free on paid plans through November 4, 2026.
- **Specs** is a multiplayer Markdown container on the canvas. It embeds FigJam files, frames and code layers, and Codex-style coding agents can read it through MCP. Drag in an existing .md file and go.
- **Payload**, the open-source headless CMS Figma acquired, now plugs into Figma Make. Prompt an app and you get a database, file storage, user login and an admin panel. Hosting is in beta and free, with pricing still to come.
- **MCP** gained 20 new integrations, including OpenCode, Dia, Junie by JetBrains and Meta Muse, plus fixes for errors and token usage. @beyang noted Amp already supports it.
- The Figma agent is generally available.

## The practical view

The most grounded take comes from an engineering walkthrough on reliable Figma-to-code loops. Its author says the usual failure is generic React/Tailwind code that ignores your design system. The fix is unglamorous: a design-system MCP catalog, a compiled Code Connect manifest, a pre-write hook that blocks banned imports, and a pixel-diff retry loop. Prototyping dropped from about an hour to ten minutes. They also found a canvas-scaling bug that quietly softened every Storybook baseline.

That is the real subtext. Figma's own announcement adds design-system code sources, guidelines, a system map and a system check so agents follow existing patterns. It reads like an admission that guardrails matter more than raw generation.

## The vendor story

Figma's showcase customers are Dell, Checkout.com, 1Password and Rocket Money, all praising faster iteration and less documentation. IBM's UX designer is using Payload so his team can run internal sites without engineers. Payload's pitch is that designers, marketers and developers share the same data.

My read: the tooling is solid, but the 17x versus 1.3x gap is the number to watch.

## Questions this post answers

### What is Figma's Code layers feature and when did it leave private beta?

Code layers is a Figma feature that lets users import prototypes from GitHub, local folders, a Chrome extension capturing live sites, or Figma's MCP server, then iterate on them with an AI agent directly on the canvas. It moved from a private beta that started in June into open beta on all plans, and it is free on paid plans through November 4, 2026, though it consumes AI credits.

### What is Figma Specs and how do coding agents interact with it?

Specs is a multiplayer Markdown container living on the Figma canvas, meant for PRDs, technical specs and design docs. It can embed FigJam files, frames and code layers, supports dragging in existing .md files, pulls data via connectors like GitHub and Hex, and coding agents such as Codex can read it over MCP. It is currently in open beta on paid plans.

### How much has AI increased code output versus shipped releases at Figma?

Figma's chief design officer reported that code output grew 17x while releases grew only 1.3x, indicating most AI-generated code is used for design exploration rather than ending up in shipped product. This gap suggests teams should be cautious about equating AI-driven code volume with actual delivery velocity.
