Mozilla has added a new `lib-integrity-googleplay` library to Firefox for Android that requests a Google Play Integrity token. The token is passed to Mozilla's MLPA server to gate access to server-side AI features like Smart Window, ensuring only unmodified, Play-installed copies on Google-certified devices can use those compute resources. Critically, this does not block Firefox from running on rooted or custom ROM devices, but those users may lose access to AI features. The move has drawn criticism from the FOSS community — particularly users of AOSP-based systems like LineageOS and GrapheneOS — given Firefox's positioning as a privacy-respecting, open-source alternative to Google's ecosystem.
