The PET was designed by Chuck Peddle, creator of the 6502 processor, and featured a built-in monochrome monitor, cassette recorder, chicklet keyboard, and 4KB RAM priced at $495. Commodore licensed Microsoft BASIC for a one-time fee of $25,000 — a deal Gates later regretted, as it extended to the VIC-20 and C-64, saving Commodore an estimated $36 million.
