# First sign-ins to customer accounts now set Customer.state and send customers/enable webhooks

**[Shopify Developer changelog](https://daily.dev/sources/shopifychangelog)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A customer's first sign-in to Shopify customer accounts now sets Customer.state to ENABLED and triggers the customers/enable and customers/update webhooks. This applies to every sign-in method, including email code, Shop, Google, Facebook, Apple, and third-party identity providers. Previously these customers stayed DISABLED after signing in, so Liquid's customer.has_account returned false; it now returns true after a first sign-in. Customers who signed in between May 27, 2024 and now were already set to ENABLED in a one-time update that sent no webhooks, so apps should query Customer.state rather than rely on webhook history to find them.

## Questions this post answers

### Why is Shopify's customers/enable webhook not firing for some customers that are already marked ENABLED?

Those customers were switched to ENABLED by a one-time Shopify update covering sign-ins between May 27, 2024 and the present, and that update did not send any webhooks. Apps relying only on customers/enable or customers/update webhook events will miss these customers; querying Customer.state directly is the reliable way to detect them.

### What does Liquid's customer.has_account return for a customer account user who hasn't signed in yet?

It returns false until the customer's first sign-in to customer accounts, after which it returns true. This differs from the previous behavior where customers stayed DISABLED after signing in, keeping has_account false even post sign-in; now a first sign-in sets Customer.state to ENABLED and has_account reflects that.

### Which sign-in methods trigger Shopify's customers/enable and customers/update webhooks for new customer accounts?

Every sign-in method triggers these webhooks on a customer's first sign-in, including email code, Shop, Google, Facebook, Apple, and third-party identity providers. This sets Customer.state to ENABLED and matches how account activation worked in legacy customer accounts.
