# Fixing JavaScript observability, one library at a time

## Summary

Sentry engineer Abdelrahman Awad describes a cross-ecosystem initiative to replace fragile monkey-patching (via import-in-the-middle and require-in-the-middle) in JavaScript APM tools with Node.js's built-in TracingChannel API from diagnostics_channel. The current approach breaks with ESM, non-Node runtimes, and bundlers. TracingChannel lets libraries emit structured observability events natively, which any APM tool can subscribe to without patching. The effort targets 44 libraries across databases, web frameworks, message queues, and AI providers. So far 10 are merged, including mysql2, node-redis, ioredis, and several unjs libraries. Claude Code is used to scale the research and implementation work across libraries the author is unfamiliar with, while all maintainer communication and architectural decisions remain human-led. The long-term goal is a shared mapper registry that translates TracingChannel events into OpenTelemetry spans, making instrumentation automatic once a library adopts the API.
