Flatpak 1.18 has been released with several improvements including better error handling, enhanced flatpak-coredumpctl output, improved flatpak update output, and faster startup under the Fish shell. The headline addition is native support for AMD's /dev/kfd device (used by the AMDKFD kernel compute driver), allowing sandboxed applications to request access to the device without needing a blanket override for all devices. This enables AMD ROCm and OpenCL compute workloads inside Flatpak sandboxes more securely. The feature originated from a 2023 GitHub issue and was recently merged.
