A third iteration of 'flatten the pick' patches for the Linux kernel scheduler has been posted to the Linux kernel mailing list. Authored by Intel engineer Peter Zijlstra, these patches address cgroup scheduling inefficiencies that hurt gaming performance, particularly on older hardware. The v3 patches introduce a 'cgroup_mode' knob, new policies for hierarchy-level weight mismatch, and a flat/single run-queue scheduler where cgroup hierarchy is expressed through dynamic weight management. Benchmarks on Sandy Bridge-era Intel hardware with a Radeon RX 580 show significant improvements to minimum frame rates, average FPS, and frame times. The patches are under review and may land in the mainline kernel soon.
