# Flipper One announced: open Linux handheld built on RK3576, but still needs community help to ship

Flipper Devices has officially announced the Flipper One, a Linux-based open hardware device aimed at network hacking, hardware experimentation, and local AI — and they're asking the community to help finish building it.

## What it is

The Flipper One is built around a Rockchip RK3576 SoC with 8 GB RAM, an 8-core CPU, Mali-G52 GPU, and a built-in NPU for running local AI models. A Raspberry Pi RP2350 microcontroller handles the UI and power management in a dual-processor architecture.

Connectivity is the main focus here. The device has dual Gigabit Ethernet, USB Ethernet at 5 Gbps, Wi-Fi 6E, and an M.2 slot that accepts 5G modems, SDR modules, AI accelerators, or NVMe SSDs. There's also PCIe, USB 3.1, and SATA for expansion. HDMI 2.1 output means it can double as a Linux desktop or media box.

This is a different device from the Flipper Zero in almost every way. The Zero was built for physical-layer radio work — NFC, infrared, sub-GHz signals. The One targets IP networking: packet analysis, VPN gateways, SDR analysis, and on-device LLMs. Think less "clone garage remotes" and more "portable network lab."

## The software stack

It runs Debian 13 with KDE Plasma, plus two custom layers the team is building:

- **Flipper OS** — profile-based Linux snapshots that let you switch between configurations (router mode, desktop mode, etc.)
- **FlipCTL** — a UI framework designed for small LCD screens

They're also working on a specialized offline LLM, though that's still largely conceptual.

Flipper has partnered with Collabora to push full mainline Linux kernel support for the RK3576 with no binary blobs. That's an ambitious goal — mainline support for new SoCs takes time, and the RK3576 is recent hardware.

## What's already public

Six GitHub repositories are live, including full schematics and PCB layouts. A public Developer Portal and wiki are open for contributions across hardware, kernel drivers, firmware, UI, and testing. The team has also opened up their task trackers and architectural debates — which is either refreshingly transparent or a sign of how much is still unresolved, depending on how you look at it.

## What they need help with

This is where it gets honest. The announcement is explicitly a call for contributors, not a product launch. The remaining gaps include:

- A closed-source DDR initialization blob that needs replacing
- OP-TEE (ARM TrustZone) support
- NPU drivers
- Upstreaming the dual-processor architecture into mainline Linux
- Hardware compatibility testing

Some of these are genuinely hard problems. DDR initialization blobs exist because DRAM bring-up is complex and vendors don't always want to open-source that code. Getting it replaced with open firmware is doable but not trivial.

## Pricing and availability

No release date. No firm price. The target is under $350 for the base model, but the team has flagged DRAM cost pressures and an unproven BOM as financial risks. It's possible this ships on time and under budget. It's also possible it doesn't ship for a while.

> This is certainly a **massive and ambitious** undertaking. Rather than shipping an updated multi-tool like the Zero, this sounds more like a NUC with integrated features from the Zero. With the current memory shortage and the growing market issues, I expect these to be sold out before anyone who could put these to use has access to them. The Zero was **_heavily_ **scalped, and I doubt sufficient measures will be in place to prevent the same levels of scalping with this. This is before even considering possible delays with the software side of development and hardware shortages. I really hope...
