# Foldable OLED Displays And The Bane Of Dust

**[Hackaday](https://daily.dev/sources/hackaday)** · 2 min read · 5 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A teardown of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 by iFixit exposes a durability weakness shared with foldable OLED devices generally: dust intrusion into the hinge mechanism. Despite an IP48 rating for water resistance, the phone offers no protection against particles smaller than 1mm. iFixit deliberately introduced UV-reactive dust into the hinge, and after exposure the phone made severe crunching noises when folded. Disassembly (which requires removing the flexible OLED screen) revealed the hinge mechanism caked in dust, rendering it effectively non-functional, while the two internal halves of the device stayed relatively clean.

## Questions this post answers

### Why does the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 hinge stop working after dust exposure?

The hinge mechanism traps fine dust particles that its IP48 rating cannot block, since IP48 only guards against water and against particles larger than 1mm. An iFixit teardown using UV-reactive dust showed the mechanism caked with debris, causing horrific crunching noises and making the fold motion effectively unusable, even though the display halves themselves stayed relatively dust-free.

### What IP rating does the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 have and what does it protect against?

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 carries an IP48 rating, meaning it is water-resistant but only dust-resistant against particles 1mm or larger. Finer dust can still penetrate the hinge mechanism, as shown when UV-reactive dust caused visible caking and mechanical crunching noises during a teardown test.
