As AI-generated code becomes mainstream — with Google reporting a quarter of its new code is AI-written — the nature of engineering work is shifting. Code generation is now cheap and abundant, but that shifts the burden to review, which becomes harder when there's no human author to interrogate or borrow mental models from. The argument is that code review is converging toward being the primary engineering activity.

For 30 years, writing code was the work and reviewing it was the chore. That just inverted
