Force Multipliers

Some engineers appear to underperform on standard delivery metrics but actually multiply the output of everyone around them through mentoring, cross-team communication, conflict resolution, and process improvement. These 'force multipliers' contrast with 'builders' who produce direct output. Both roles are essential, and the right balance depends on team size — multipliers have outsized impact on larger teams. Three key multiplier skills are technical expertise, communication and culture influence, and process building. Importantly, engineers can grow into high-impact multiplier roles (staff, principal) without moving into management.
