Forgejo forks its own path forward

Forgejo, a self-hosted git forge that started as a soft fork of Gitea in late 2022, has officially decided to become a hard fork as of early 2024. This means Forgejo is no longer bound to Gitea's codebase and can develop independently, reducing tech debt and implementing changes without risk of conflicts with Gitea. While upgrading from Gitea to Forgejo remains possible from the last Gitea version at the time of the fork, future drop-in replacement compatibility is no longer guaranteed. The Forgejo API will strive to remain compatible with Gitea's API. The decision reflects a divergence in governance, development models, and goals between the two projects, with Forgejo prioritizing community control and liberation from proprietary tools.
