# From Hijacked Pbx To Stolen Trunk Inj3ctor3s Campaign

## Summary

INJ3CTOR3's FreePBX toll-fraud implant now steals SIP trunk, AMI, database, and mail-relay credentials in addition to running fraud through the infected box. The k.php malware uploads 17 configuration files to two staging servers (45.95.147.178 and 160.119.69.4) on each run, with some cron beacons repeating it every minute an infected host stays online. With a stolen trunk secret, attackers can register with the victim's carrier and place calls from anywhere, unless the carrier restricts the trunk to the victim's IP addresses. Rotating credentials on a still-infected host hands the new secrets to the operator within minutes. Shadowserver data showed more than 900 compromised FreePBX instances in February 2026, with over 700 still compromised in May. Rebuilding from a clean image is the most reliable fix, and rotating the 17 files' secrets should happen only after the host is clean.

## Questions this post answers

### If my FreePBX server was compromised, is it enough to wipe the webshell and rebuild the box?

No, rebuilding alone is not enough because the implant now uploads SIP trunk, AMI, database, and mail-relay credentials to attacker servers every minute while infected. Even after rebuilding, stolen trunk secrets let attackers register with your carrier and place calls from any machine, so you must rotate every credential in 17 configuration files only after the host is confirmed clean.

### How many FreePBX systems have been compromised by toll fraud campaigns?

Shadowserver data showed more than 900 Sangoma FreePBX instances compromised in February 2026, and over 700 of those remained compromised by May, as reported by The Hacker News. The persistence comes from self-healing cron jobs and backdoor accounts that rebuild the webshell within a minute of removal.

### Can I trust the FreePBX admin console to show me all configured SIP trunks?

No, the FreePBX console only lists trunks created through its own database, while Asterisk reads whatever is in its configuration files directly. A trunk written straight into /etc/asterisk/pjsip_custom.conf can carry calls while the FreePBX Trunks page shows no record, so audits should also use the Asterisk CLI commands pjsip show endpoints and pjsip show registrations.

_developers hardening VoIP infrastructure can follow audit techniques like these via daily.dev._
