# From “It Works” to “I Understand Why It Works”

**[Developer's Journey](https://daily.dev/sources/devjourney)** · [@drakeze](https://daily.dev/drakeze) · 2 min read · 136 upvotes · 13 comments

## Summary

A developer reflects on transitioning from making things work to understanding why they work, focusing on MongoDB cluster setup, Prisma integration, and intentional system design. They emphasize documentation, slowing down to think through architecture decisions, and planning a Discord bot project with a design-first approach. The piece explores the value of deeper technical understanding over surface-level implementation.

## **MongoDB From “It Works” to “I Understand Why”**

I’ve been working more directly with cluster setup and environment configuration.

Connection strings.
 Security rules.
 Local vs deployed differences.

There’s a real shift between:

“It connects.”
 and
 “I understand why it connects.”

That difference feels important.

I’ve been documenting:

- Cluster architecture decisions
- Environment variable handling
- Schema planning before implementation
- Where Mongo differs from relational thinking

The documentation is starting to feel just as important as the code.

## **Prisma Integration Slowing Down on Purpose**

Connecting Prisma to Mongo forced me to slow down.

Instead of just making models until things worked, I’ve been thinking more intentionally about data relationships and validation layers.

Some friction showed up around:

- Schema structure decisions
- How Prisma abstracts Mongo
- Where validation logic should live

It’s not confusion in a bad way.

It’s the kind that forces better structure.

I’m using AI as a safety net, not the architect.

I design first.
 Then I verify.

That distinction matters to me.

## **Next Direction Discord Bot**

I’m planning to build a Discord bot from scratch.

Not just to have one.

But to understand:

- Event handling
- Command routing
- Database syncing
- Permission logic
- Deployment flow

Before writing code, I’m building a planning canvas.

System design first.
 Implementation second.

I want consistency across everything I build.

## **Documentation Becoming a System**

The more I document backend decisions and architecture breakdowns, the more I see reusable structure forming.

Not rushing that.

It needs to be tested through real builds first.

But the foundation is there.

## **Looking for Technical Discussion Spaces**

I’m exploring places to share deeper backend breakdowns.

Mongo architecture.
 Prisma patterns.
 Systems thinking.

If you know communities focused on serious backend discussion, I’m open.

Not surface-level advice.
 Real engineering conversation.

## **Quick Summary**

Backend work isn’t exciting on the surface.

But understanding _why_ things work instead of just making them work is changing how I build.
