# FSR 4.1 could make handheld GPU upgrades irrelevant, and that's exactly what the market needed

**[XDA Developers](https://daily.dev/sources/xda-developers)** · 4 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

AMD's FSR 4.1 is expanding beyond RDNA 4 GPUs to support RDNA 3 APUs found in popular gaming handhelds like the Asus ROG Ally with the Ryzen Z1 Extreme. This machine-learning-based upscaling technology allows lower internal rendering resolutions to produce much better image quality, reducing the need for frequent hardware upgrades. While FSR 4.1 won't make older handhelds match newer hardware, it extends their useful lifespan by improving image quality and enabling better power/performance tradeoffs — a meaningful shift for a market that has suffered from rapid, phone-like upgrade cycles.

## Questions this post answers

### Does AMD FSR 4.1 work on the Ryzen Z1 Extreme found in the Asus ROG Ally?

Yes, AMD expanded FSR 4.1 support to RDNA 3 APUs, which includes the Ryzen Z1 Extreme used in handhelds like the Asus ROG Ally. FSR 4.1 was initially limited to RDNA 4 GPUs such as the RX 9070XT, then extended to RX 7000-series discrete cards, and now covers RDNA 3 handheld chips as well.

### How does FSR 4.1 improve image quality compared to earlier FSR versions on gaming handhelds?

FSR 4.1 uses machine-learning-based reconstruction, the approach AMD introduced with FSR 4, which narrows the image-quality gap with Nvidia's DLSS. It makes images rendered at lower internal resolutions look noticeably better and hold up under complex scenes, where earlier FSR versions tended to visibly break down, making lower resolution modes far more usable on small handheld screens.
