# FSR 4.1 will be the best thing to happen to handheld PCs this year, and the timing couldn't be more perfect

## Summary

AMD's FSR 4.1, a machine-learning-based upscaling technology, is coming to handheld PCs in two waves: RDNA 3 and RDNA 3.5 devices (ROG Ally, Legion Go, etc.) in July 2026, and RDNA 2 devices like the Steam Deck in early 2027. The upgrade addresses FSR 3.1's known weaknesses — softness, ghosting, and texture instability — with sharper detail, smoother motion, and better stability. The timing is significant because a DRAM crisis has stalled hardware refreshes, making this software uplift the primary performance improvement available to current-gen handhelds. Some caveats remain: ray regeneration and radiance caching will likely stay RDNA 4 exclusive, and AMD hasn't confirmed whether AI-based frame generation will be included in the handheld rollout.
