# Gamescom 2026 breaks records again, but organizers say growth has limits

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 7 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Gamescom 2026 is set to be the largest edition yet, with over 1,600 exhibitors from 67 countries, sold-out exhibition space, and a growing indie area now featuring more than 420 companies. Country pavilions increased 25% year over year, with first-time participation from Bulgaria, Cyprus, Hungary, Morocco, and Nigeria. Despite the record numbers, organizers say they are deliberately avoiding growth for its own sake, focusing instead on strengthening existing regional spinoffs and supporting indie developers through discounted rates and investor-matching programs rather than simply expanding. Separately, Geoff Keighley and Game's Felix Falk clarified how Opening Night Live trailer placements work, distinguishing between free editorial picks and paid slots.

## Content

## The show itself

Gamescom 2026 broke its own records. Over 1,600 exhibitors from 67 countries attended, the 233,000 square meters of exhibition space sold out by July, and the indie area grew 16 percent year over year to host more than 420 companies. Country pavilions increased by 25 percent, with Bulgaria, Cyprus, Hungary, Morocco, and Nigeria joining for the first time, bringing the total to nearly 50 pavilions from 40 countries. German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visited the show, which ran August 26-30.

Felix Falk, managing director of co-organizer Game, was clear that the growth strategy is deliberate rather than aggressive. The priority is strengthening existing events in Germany, Latin America (Gamescom Latam), and Southeast Asia (Gamescom Asia x Thailand Game Show) before considering new locations. Expansion into new markets has to be organic and locally relevant, not just growth for its own sake.

Gamescom Dev, formerly known as Devcom and rebranded in August 2025, ran August 23-25 with over 380 speakers across 230 sessions. Its new managing director, Frederik Hammes, made an interesting observation: a speaker survey found that 47 percent expect AI to be the most impactful development in games over the next three years, yet only 11 percent ranked AI literacy as the top skill to develop. Leadership came first at 27 percent. Hammes also announced a new closed-door Leadership Summit series for executives to discuss market challenges without the usual conference polish.

The Gamescom Dev Awards recognized six winners. Wartime horror title Mutter took Vocal and Visual Excellence, Blue Prince won Game Design Excellence, and Cards & Cannons was named Most Promising Game. Tencent Games business development director Amir Satvat received the Ambassador Award for his support of industry workers during ongoing layoffs and studio closures.

## Opening Night Live

Geoff Keighley confirmed that Opening Night Live includes both editorial placements (free, based on the scale of the announcement) and paid advertising slots. Felix Falk noted that most digital show content is unpaid and serves to extend Gamescom's reach beyond the physical event.

The show leaned heavily on Chinese and Korean studios. HoYoverse revealed Nodusfall, a mythology-themed co-op RPG built in Unreal Engine 5 with a realistic art style, blending myths from multiple cultures. Players take on the role of Weavers fighting the Dreadnodus. No release date yet. NetEase showed Ananta and Sea of Remnants, and Krafton revealed PUBG: Ded.Net.

The standout announcement was probably The Witcher 3: a free remaster launches September 29 with ray tracing and improved combat, previous expansions included at no cost, and a new paid expansion called Songs of the Past arrives in 2027.

Final Fantasy 7: Revelation was confirmed for spring 2027 with a simultaneous multiplatform launch. Other reveals included Lego Skylines, Crazy Taxi World Tour, Turok: Origins, Worms: Galactic Tactics, and Humankind 2.

## Games announced or detailed

**Exodus** (Archetype Entertainment, published by Wizards of the Coast) — April 7, 2027 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. A sci-fi RPG from former BioWare developers, with cinematic storytelling, recruitable companions, and a time-dilation mechanic where interstellar travel causes years to pass for those left behind. A new trailer introduced Salt, a mech-piloting octopus mercenary. Matthew McConaughey plays a mysterious character in what is his first major video game role.

**Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons** (Invoke Studios) — 2027 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. A single-player action-adventure set in the Domain of Dread known as Darkon. Players control weapons master Kaatri (voiced by Tricia Helfer), who forms a pact with witch queen Tasha (Maggie Robertson) to gain magical power. Spells like Eldritch Blast, Misty Step, and Black Tentacles work as a flexible toolbox for combat, traversal, and environmental puzzles rather than fixed attacks. No tabletop rules or party mechanics — this is a focused single-protagonist action game.

**Metro 2039** (4A Games, Deep Silver) — February 2027 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Set in a Novoreich-occupied Moscow under the fanatical ruler Hunter. The new protagonist, known as the Stranger, replaces Artyom. The trailer emphasized tighter, handcrafted level design closer to the original Metro games than Exodus's open world.

**Silent Hill: Townfall** (Konami) — September 24 on PS5 and PC. Set in 1996 in the fictional Scottish coastal town of St. Amelia. Jovan Adepo voices protagonist Simon Ordell, Kezia Burrows plays Zoe, and Terry O'Quinn portrays Richard. An 18-minute gameplay showcase also dropped alongside the cast reveal.

**ONTOS** (Frictional Games) — 2027 on PC, Xbox, and PS5. A sci-fi horror game set in a repurposed moon hotel called Samsara. Protagonist Aditi Amani investigates her estranged father's legacy through body horror, moral choices, and environmental storytelling. Frictional's previous games include Amnesia and SOMA.

**Mega Man: Dual Override** (Capcom) — 2027 on Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. Players choose between Mega Man and Proto Man, each with distinct fighting styles. New Custom Chips modify abilities, and an Override system grants temporary power boosts followed by a vulnerability window. The first revealed enemy is Twinkle Girl, an entertainer robot. The game marks the franchise's 40th anniversary.

**Heroes of Might and Magic III remake** (Ubisoft) — 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Built in the Snowdrop engine with free camera control, 4K visuals, dynamic lighting, weather and seasons, a new prologue campaign, and a revamped online mode. The original's turn-based strategy and tactical grid combat are intact. Early reactions to the visuals have been mixed, with some commenters describing the look as generic or mobile-game-like.

**Murals** (Dlala Studios) — 2027 on PC. An isometric action-adventure set in twisted versions of classic fairytales, with hand-drawn art and customizable combat using melee, ranged weapons, and odd items like talking swords and dragon blasters. Dlala's first original IP since 2014, self-published after Battletoads (2020) and Disney Illusion Island (2023).

**Nodusfall** (HoYoverse) — No release date. Co-op RPG blending myths from multiple cultures, built in Unreal Engine 5. Players are Weavers fighting the Dreadnodus.

**AION 2** (NCSoft) — Global launch October 5. The MMORPG features aerial combat and a game world 36 times larger than the original. A Launch Scale Test runs September 17-18 with a level cap of 37 and no purchases or marketplace access. Steam players need to uninstall the playtest app and download the full game separately for Advanced Access starting September 30.

**Escape from Playtime** (Mob Entertainment) — Early access, date unspecified. A 1-4 player co-op survival horror game set in the Poppy Playtime universe. Players are Smiling Critters trapped in an abandoned toy factory, gathering resources while evading rejected Playtime Co. creations. A mysterious Voice can alter the factory's layout, and environments are procedurally generated.

## MBC Game Studio

MBC Studios, part of Saudi-owned media conglomerate MBC Group, announced MBC Game Studio at Gamescom. The fully remote studio is led by CEO Daniel Engelhardt and COO Trevor Williams, with staff from BioWare, Hi-Rez, Ubisoft Montreal, and Bungie. They've spent three years developing an action-adventure called 1001 Threads of Mizan, set in the world of One Thousand and One Nights. No release window was given.

The Saudi Public Investment Fund acquired a 54 percent stake in MBC Group in 2025, which has drawn scrutiny given the PIF's other gaming industry investments. Engelhardt said the studio has ruled out generative AI in development.

## Ubisoft's Player Council

Ubisoft launched The Player Council, a platform for players to test early-stage game concepts and prototypes before public release. Currently in soft launch with four projects available — Riders Republic, Atomega, and two unreleased concepts codenamed Split Point and Rook — with two more arriving in autumn 2026. Testers sign NDAs and unlock access to more sensitive content as they advance through tiers. Player Council director Vye Alexander described the goal as incubating ideas with players before games reach the first playable prototype stage, which is earlier in development than traditional external playtesting.

## IGDA incubator census

The IGDA Incubation SIG presented the first international census of game incubation and accelerator programs at Gamescom, based on responses from 84 program leaders worldwide. Topics covered included international collaboration, support for Indigenous and underrepresented developers, and what Jason Della Rocca called "inception publishing" — a model aimed at giving studios more sustainability and IP control from the start.
