GenAI is Changing the Future of Development Teams

GenAI tools like Cursor, Claude Code, and Copilot can significantly speed up software maintenance tasks such as security vulnerability patching, but the real bottleneck in enterprise organizations is rarely the coding itself. Downstream assurance activities — end-to-end testing and change approval processes — often consume more time than the coding phase. A worked example shows a 4-week maintenance cycle that could be reduced to a single day by combining AI-assisted coding, automated test generation, and streamlined change management (e.g., ITIL standard changes). The key insight is that GenAI adoption is fundamentally an organizational challenge, not just a technical one: procurement hurdles, security concerns, misaligned team incentives, and manual assurance processes all limit the gains unless addressed holistically.
