Getty Images shares surged roughly 200% after announcing a multi-year display partnership with OpenAI, allowing licensed Getty photographs to appear in ChatGPT search and discovery features. The deal marks a dramatic reversal for Getty, which had been one of the most aggressive litigants against AI image generators, having sued Stability AI on both sides of the Atlantic over alleged scraping of 12 million images. Notably, the deal covers display only — not model training — and discloses no financial terms. The move fits a broader pattern of OpenAI signing content licensing deals with major publishers, and signals Getty's strategic shift from fighting AI disruption in court to monetizing it through distribution.
