# Gitea 1.22 is the last version to allow a transparent upgrade to Forgejo

**[Forgejo News](https://daily.dev/sources/forgejo)** · 4 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Forgejo v10.0.0 (releasing January 15, 2025) will be the last version to support transparent upgrades from Gitea instances. Gitea v1.22 is the final version that can be directly migrated to Forgejo; users on Gitea v1.23 or higher will need to perform manual database modifications or use the in-app repository migration tool. The divergence stems from Forgejo becoming a hard fork in 2024, with the two codebases now differing significantly in database schema, feature implementations, and subsystem architecture. The post also notes that Gitea has not cooperated in maintaining compatibility and has at times actively accelerated the divergence by re-implementing Forgejo features independently.
