# GitHub - wie-project/kakehashi: Userspace macOS translation layer for Linux ARM64

## Summary

Kakehashi is a userspace macOS ARM64 to Linux aarch64 translation layer written in Rust. It loads Darwin Mach-O binaries on Linux aarch64, maps a freestanding libSystem, and translates BSD syscalls — with no JIT required. Verified working tools include 7-Zip and curl, with multi-threaded execution supported. The primary use case is running Darwin CLI tools on cheap Linux aarch64 CI runners instead of expensive macOS runners. Benchmarks show a ~5x wall-time overhead on syscall-heavy workloads, but the cost savings from Linux arm64 runners (roughly 10-12x cheaper per minute than macOS) can still make it economically favorable. The project is built with Cargo, supports Docker/Colima and UTM environments, and is licensed under Apache 2.0.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 1 discussion and 76 comments across hackernews (as of 2026-08-03).

**TL;DR:** The community is cautiously interested in Kakehashi, an experimental project to run macOS CLI binaries on Linux ARM, but raises significant concerns about long-term feasibility given Apple's rapidly changing ABI, the relationship to the existing Darling project, and the heavy use of LLMs in development.

**Sentiment:** 45% positive · 35% mixed · 20% skeptical

**The case for**

- Running macOS CLI tools (especially Xcode tools) natively on Linux ARM would unlock iOS development on Linux runners, which many find valuable.
- The userspace-only approach in Rust is seen as a reasonable architectural choice for a lightweight emulation layer.
- Community members noted excitement about potential use cases like AU plugin bridging (similar to yabridge) and iOS build pipelines.

**The pushback**

- Apple's ABI surface is large and changes on a near-yearly cadence, making long-term maintenance extremely difficult.
- Questions about clean-room status are unresolved — the project's use of LLMs trained on Darling's codebase raises potential IP concerns.
- The project is very early-stage with significant performance gaps (~5.2x slower than native) and incomplete stability.
- Even well-resourced projects like React Native struggle to keep up with Xcode build tool changes on macOS itself.

**By community**

- hackernews (mixed): Commenters are genuinely intrigued by the ambition but skeptical about long-term feasibility given Apple's ABI churn, the shadow of Darling, and the LLM-heavy development process.

**Hottest debate:** Whether using LLMs trained on Darling's codebase constitutes a clean-room implementation or raises copyright/IP concerns.

**Open questions**

- Will the project support different macOS target versions and their differing filesystem/environment behaviors?
- How will the project handle Apple's yearly ABI changes without a large dedicated team?
- Could this combine efforts with the Darling project rather than duplicating work?

**Highlights**

> Historically, I’d say that the chances of this being successful are exceptionally low given how large the ABI surface is — and it will wildly change out from underneath you on a near yearly cadence. Perhaps LLMs change that calculation. I really couldn’t say.

> Interesting project! A long term vision for MacOS applications is feasible given the success of WINE/Proton with Windows applications. Are you familiar with the Darling project? https://github.com/darlinghq/darling There's an open PR for ARM64 support https://github.com/darlinghq/darling/pull/1753 Could you combine efforts or do your goals differ too much?

> Darling is written in a different language so I don't think the LLM would copy paste code from it directly. But it is the main (only?) prior art, so it could be argued that everything the LLM knows about how to do this came because it read and understood Darling, i.e. if Darling didn't exist it may still be able to do this but it would have to figure it out from first principles. Not saying it happened here, but it's an interesting thought experiment: what if you order an LLm to achieve the same goal as a popular open source project, using all the lessons learned and pitfalls faced by that project, but not to copy the code. Indeed, LLM code is now often better than human code, so direct code copying would be a disadvantage. Humans are certainly inspired by other projects like this all the time and it isn't considered plagiarism.

> I'm curious: how large is it really? As I understand it, Kakehashi is targeting command line programs, especially Xcode-tools. How much non-POSIX/Mach/BSD interface do Mac command line programs use? How much of that is not already open source. How much of that changes yearly? The only thing that comes to mind is process security for codesign and notarization but I'm just guessing.
