# GitHub Copilot is officially DEAD (and my wallet almost died with it)!

If you thought Copilot's flat monthly fee would last forever, I have bad news. GitHub is officially transitioning to a **usage-based billing model** starting June 2026. The days of the unlimited $10 flat rate are over.

I just tested their official simulation tool ([https://copilot-billing-preview.github.com/](https://copilot-billing-preview.github.com/)) to calculate how much my current development workflow would cost under the new "AI Credits" system... AND THE RESULT IS ABSOLUTELY INSANE! 🤯💥

- **Current Billing:** $105.19 USD
- **New Simulated Billing:** A staggering $2,757.82 USD! 💸😱
- **The Damage:** Over $2,650 extra for the exact same usage!

The rise of AI agents analyzing entire codebases made the flat rate financially unsustainable for Microsoft. With these new rules, for heavy-user indie devs and small agencies, **GitHub Copilot as we know it is officially dead.**

> It's a bit insane but not entirely unexpected. The age of user gathering is quickly coming to an end and the age of value extraction is dawning for AI. Now that enough enterprises have drank the AI koolaid and enough people are dependent on AI, expect this to happen more and more across the board.
