# GitHub goes down for hours, Cursor ships its own git host the same day

**[Agentic Digest](https://daily.dev/sources/agents_digest)** · 5 min read · 2 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

GitHub had a rough Monday, with a 9+ hour outage taking down Actions, Issues, PRs, and Copilot at the same time Cursor launched Origin, its own git hosting platform. Dynatrace is paying roughly $915 million for Arize to bundle AI-agent tracing into its observability stack. A ByteDance paper found that a chunk of what looks like successful instruction-following in AGENTS.md files is actually the model doing what it would have done anyway. And Google DeepMind lost four senior researchers, including Jeff Dean, in a leadership shakeup that also saw Demis Hassabis step back from CEO duties.

## GitHub outage coincides with Cursor's Origin launch

GitHub went down starting 9:40 AM EDT on August 17, with API requests, Actions, Webhooks, Issues, and Pull Requests all degraded for hours; error rates hit 20% on web/API and 50% on archive downloads, and even Copilot got knocked out. The same day, Cursor shipped Origin, its own git hosting platform built by the former Graphite team, pitched as "a git forge for the agentic era" with claims of 22.6 commits per second and sub-400ms global sync. Origin is on by default for paid Cursor plans, opt-out only for enterprise admins, and Cursor hasn't published data retention or training-use terms yet, which is a real gap for a product asking for your whole codebase. This also lands right after SpaceX's $60B acquisition of Anysphere, meaning one company increasingly controls the editor, the agents, and now the repo. ## ByteDance paper: your AGENTS.md rules might not be doing anything

A new evaluation (Harness-IF) separates cases where an agent follows your instructions from cases where it just happened to do what it would have done anyway. Across 12 frontier models and 60 multi-turn coding tasks, raw accuracy sits between 72.1% and 85.9%, but accuracy on rules that actually contradict the model's default behavior drops to 66.1%-78.6%, a 3.6 to 7.4 point hit for every model tested. It also found instruction precedence doesn't follow prompt depth the way people assume: system prompts, project files, and user instructions all beat tool and skill descriptions regardless of stack position. If you've spent real time tuning AGENTS.md, some of what feels like it's working may just be coincidence. [Read more](https://daily.dev/posts/9sP4IK0lh)

## Dynatrace buys Arize for agent observability, ~$915M

Dynatrace is acquiring Arize, the company behind the open-source Phoenix platform and the OpenInference tracing spec, in a deal reportedly worth around $915 million ($815M cash plus equity). Arize traces what agents actually do step by step, model calls, retrieval, tool use, while Dynatrace already correlates telemetry across apps and infrastructure at enterprise scale. Combined, the pitch is tracing a failed transaction all the way back to the specific agent action that caused it, instead of stitching logs together by hand. ## DeepMind reshuffles leadership as four senior researchers exit

Demis Hassabis is stepping down from day-to-day CEO duties at DeepMind, moving to chairman and taking on chief scientist at Alphabet, with Koray Kavukcuoglu taking over as SVP reporting to Sundar Pichai. Separately, Jeff Dean is leaving after 27 years to cofound a new company, and he's taking Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le with him. That's four heavyweight researchers walking out the door together, on top of earlier departures of Noam Shazeer (to OpenAI) and John Jumper (to Anthropic). At some point a string of exits like this stops looking like normal churn. [Read more](https://daily.dev/posts/dvzIyQ7QI)
