# GitHub goes down for hours, Stripe's OpenRouter deal gets a number

**[Backend Digest](https://daily.dev/sources/backend_digest)** · 4 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

GitHub had a multi-hour outage that took Pull Requests, Issues, Actions, and even Copilot down together, with a rumored AWS angle behind the scenes. GitLab shipped an emergency patch for a critical unauthenticated GraphQL code injection bug rated 9.4. Dynatrace is acquiring AI-agent observability startup Arize for roughly $915 million, and the Stripe-OpenRouter deal finally got sourced by Bloomberg at over $7 billion. Kubeflow graduated from CNCF with a big batch of LLM-oriented updates, rounding out a day heavy on both outages and AI infrastructure consolidation.

**TLDR:** GitHub had a multi-hour outage that took Pull Requests, Issues, Actions, and even Copilot down together, with a rumored AWS angle behind the scenes. ## GitHub and Copilot go down together for hours

Starting at 9:40 AM EDT on August 17, GitHub's core workflows buckled: API requests, Actions, Webhooks, Issues, and Pull Requests all degraded, with error rates around 20% on web/API and near 50% on archive downloads and raw content. Copilot went down too, so the AI fallback people reach for during outages wasn't available either. Authentication (SAML, OIDC, SCIM, Team Sync) was also affected, meaning some people couldn't even log in. The rumored backstory is that Microsoft has been leaning on AWS to absorb GitHub's traffic growth because Azure couldn't keep pace during an ongoing migration - unconfirmed, but a good reminder of how much quietly depends on one platform. ## GitLab patches a 9.4-severity unauthenticated code injection bug

GitLab shipped 19.2.4, 19.1.6, 19.0.8, and 18.11.11 to fix CVE-2026-19478, a code injection flaw via a GraphQL directive that let unauthenticated users remotely modify or delete public projects and user data. A second bug, CVE-2026-19650, is a CSRF issue in the GraphQL multiplex handler that allows mutations via GET requests. Every self-managed install from 18.2 onward is affected and should patch now; GitLab.com and GitLab Dedicated are already fixed. [Read more](https://daily.dev/posts/ia6Q2kFtI)

## Dynatrace buys Arize for AI-agent observability, around $915M

Dynatrace is acquiring Arize, the company behind the open-source Phoenix platform, the Arize AX product, and the OpenInference tracing spec built on OpenTelemetry. The deal is reportedly about $815 million in cash plus replacement equity, expected to close this quarter or early next. The pitch is tracing a failed transaction all the way back to the specific agent action or prompt that caused it, instead of manually stitching logs across separate systems - useful as agents start touching real production traffic instead of demos. ## Stripe's OpenRouter deal gets a number: $7B+

Bloomberg reports Stripe finalized an agreement to acquire OpenRouter for more than $7 billion, up sharply from the $1.3 billion Series B valuation just three months ago and even above the $10 billion figure the Wall Street Journal floated in July talks. Stripe and OpenRouter already share billing infrastructure through Stripe Invoicing and usage-based billing. Worth an audit moment either way: centralized billing through one gateway is its own lock-in trap, and switching models mid-session wrecks prompt-cache hit rates, making costs quadratic for long agentic workflows.
