## Summary

GitHub now sees 7.4 billion commits per month, up from 2.9 billion in August and 1.4 billion in April. That compares with 65 million monthly commits back in 2024. Growth is driven mostly by agentic demand. To keep up, GitHub is adding 4 million more CPU cores, 160 petabytes of high-speed storage, more GitHub Actions compute, and 50 Tb/s of network capacity, on top of 3 million cores added in August mostly on Azure. GitHub is also rearchitecting its platform to separate compute and storage, a change its internal benchmarks show can deliver up to 35x higher write throughput. Core AI EVP Jay Parikh writes in the announcement.

## Questions this post answers

### How many commits per month is GitHub currently handling?

GitHub reported 7.4 billion commits per month as of its GitHub Universe announcement, up from 2.9 billion in August and 1.4 billion in April. For comparison, developers pushed only 65 million monthly commits to the platform in 2024. The company attributes the surge mainly to agentic demand from AI coding agents.

### How much infrastructure is GitHub adding to handle increased commit volume?

GitHub is adding 4 million more CPU cores, 160 petabytes of high-speed storage, additional GitHub Actions compute power, and 50 Tb/s of network capacity. This follows an earlier addition of 3 million CPU cores, mostly on Azure, announced in August. The scaling is driven by rapid growth in agentic, AI-driven development activity.

### What performance improvement does GitHub's new compute-storage separation architecture provide?

GitHub's internal benchmarks show the new architecture, which separates compute and storage, can deliver up to 35 times higher write throughput. Microsoft Core AI EVP Jay Parikh says capacity additions alone are not enough and that the underlying architecture had to change to handle the new volume and shape of agent-driven software development.
