The Khronos 3D Formats Working Group is developing glTF 2.1, a backward-compatible revision of the core glTF specification focused on supporting large, composed 3D scenes rather than just single assets. Key additions include standardized multi-file scene graphs, spatial subdivision, LOD hierarchies, progressive streaming, and integration of 3D Tiles concepts from the Open Geospatial Consortium. Use cases targeted include digital twins, BIM, smart cities, geospatial representation, and large-scale collaborative environments. The spec is being developed openly on GitHub and community feedback is still welcome, with discussions planned at the glTF Ecosystem Forum at SIGGRAPH on July 23, 2026.
