General Motors is using AI and physics-based simulation to cut vehicle development time in half, led by ex-Tesla executive Sterling Anderson. The approach collapses traditionally siloed engineering functions — chassis, powertrain, brakes, thermal systems — into a unified virtual environment. Crash simulations that once took 15 hours now complete in under a minute. The electric GMC Hummer went from design to showroom in two years instead of the typical four to five. GM is also applying these tools to autonomous vehicles (running ~2 million simulation runs per week), Cadillac's F1 program, military systems, and NASA's Artemis lunar rover. Generative AI even redesigned a Corvette hatch bracket, producing a lighter, stiffer, tree-root-inspired structure.
