GM has opened a new Battery Cell Development Center (BCDC) at its Warren Tech Center, serving as a pilot-scale bridge between its Wallace Battery Cell Research Center and full-scale gigafactories. The facility is central to GM's plan to commercialize LMR (lithium-manganese-rich) battery chemistry by 2028, which promises energy density close to NMC at costs comparable to cheaper LFP cells — potentially cutting EV costs by $6,000 per vehicle. The BCDC can produce ~2,500 cells per day and uses a digital twin of the entire facility, along with AI-based physics simulations (over 150 million CPU hours logged on LMR alone), to accelerate development and reduce costly production errors. GM aims to bring LMR vehicles to market a year ahead of its original schedule, with first BCDC batches expected later this year.
