# GNOME 50 Enhances Display Experience with Stable VRR and Improved Frame Scheduling

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

GNOME 50 brings Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support out of experimental status, now accessible through display settings by default on compatible systems. The release includes 11 Mutter patches that implement deadline timers, Wayland commit timing protocol support, and reduced input latency. Additional improvements cover frame scheduling, discrete GPU detection, and better HiDPI and virtual monitor handling for remote desktop scenarios.

## Content

The latest GNOME 50 release marks a significant milestone as Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support transitions from experimental to stable status. Initially requiring manual activation via `gsettings`, VRR can now be accessed more conveniently through the display settings, although it remains disabled by default for compatibility reasons. This maturation of the VRR feature coincides with recent updates and improvements, ensuring better functionality on most systems. However, users may still encounter issues with certain monitors that do not adequately support VRR.

Significant improvements to VRR were brought about through 11 patches merged to Mutter Git, which aim to enhance the overall user experience. These patches implement the use of a deadline timer for VRR, support for proper Wayland commit timing protocol, and a reduction in input-to-output latency by capturing mouse cursor positions at specific times. Consequently, VRR support has been seamlessly integrated into GNOME Settings, appearing by default on systems equipped for VRR when GNOME 50 officially releases on March 18.

Furthermore, the GNOME Shell and Mutter 50 beta releases present a variety of enhancements to display and performance features. These updates deliver improved frame scheduling, more effective discrete GPU detection, and optimized handling for HiDPI and virtual monitors, particularly in remote desktop scenarios. Collectively, these advancements in GNOME 50 assure a more refined and robust graphical environment for users.
