# GNOME Mutter 51.rc Adds Cross-GPU Buffer Scan-Out Support, Other Last Minute Work

**[Phoronix](https://daily.dev/sources/phoronix)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

GNOME Mutter and GNOME Shell 51.rc release candidates have been tagged ahead of the formal GNOME 51 release. Mutter 51.rc adds cross-GPU buffer scan-out support for better efficiency on multi-GPU setups like hybrid laptops, stylus eraser button configuration, Night Light support on hardware lacking GAMMA_LUT, client initial configuration overriding, and a configurable background blur effect policy (default blur radius 24, saturation 1.25, noise 0.015). It also fixes hardware cursor handling for SVG cursors, multi-monitor primary detection, HDR desaturation, an external monitor hot-plug hang, direct scan-out for DMA-BUF-less captures, and various memory leaks and crashes. GNOME Shell 51.rc now uses the Rust-based Glycin library to load and cache background images alongside direct scan-out fixes.

## Questions this post answers

### What new feature does GNOME Mutter 51 add for multi-GPU laptops?

Mutter 51 introduces cross-GPU buffer scan-out support, aimed at improving efficiency on multi-GPU setups such as hybrid laptops. An automatic test attempts cross-GPU buffer scan-out, building on Mutter's earlier direct scan-out improvements. This lands in the 51.rc release candidate tagged alongside GNOME Shell 51.rc.

_Track GNOME Mutter's evolving GPU scan-out support as it lands on daily.dev._

### What is the default background blur configuration in Mutter 51?

Mutter 51.rc's new background effect policy defaults to a blur radius of 24, saturation of 1.25, and noise of 0.015 for client-requested background blur. GNOME Shell or other compositors can override these visual parameters with their own values instead of relying on the defaults.

_Follow GNOME compositor visual defaults like this on daily.dev when tuning desktop shells._

### What library does GNOME Shell 51 use to load background images?

GNOME Shell 51.rc switches to the Rust-based Glycin library for loading and caching background images, alongside fixes related to direct scan-out usage. This is part of the GNOME Shell 51.rc release candidate tagged together with Mutter 51.rc.

_Keep up with Rust adoption inside GNOME internals like Glycin on daily.dev._
