Good conversations have lots of doorknobs

Conversations work best when participants create "affordances"—conversational doorknobs that others can grab onto. The give-and-take dynamic (asking questions) and take-and-take approach (making declarations) both have value, but what matters most is offering graspable entry points for others to engage. Research shows people prefer fast responses and deeper conversations over small talk, but egocentrism often prevents us from creating these conversational opportunities. The key is listening for doorknobs others offer and providing plenty of your own through self-disclosure, bold claims, and meaningful digressions.
