# Google cripples IPIDEA proxy network abused by crims

**[The Register](https://daily.dev/sources/theregister)** · 3 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Google's Threat Intelligence Group disrupted IPIDEA, one of the world's largest residential proxy networks used by cybercriminals to hide malicious traffic. The operation reduced IPIDEA's device pool by millions across smartphones, Windows PCs, and consumer hardware. Over 550 threat groups were observed using IPIDEA exit nodes in a seven-day period. The network enrolled devices through proxy SDKs embedded in apps, often marketed as bandwidth monetization tools, and also connected enrolled devices to botnets including BadBox 2.0, Aisuru, and Kimwolf. Google collaborated with Spur, Lumen's Black Lotus Labs, and Cloudflare to disrupt the network's infrastructure and domain resolution.
