Google DeepMind's TacticAI uses geometric deep learning to predict football plays up to 8 seconds ahead using broadcast-style visual data. Originally developed with Liverpool FC, whose experts preferred its tactical suggestions 90% of the time over real match configurations, the system is now being deployed by Brazilian club Palmeiras for live open-play analysis — a first for the technology, which was previously limited to set-piece analysis. Coaches can use a drag-and-drop interface to virtually reposition players and simulate downstream tactical effects. Google also partnered with Brazil's football confederation CBF for World Cup preparation. The underlying approach, treating players as nodes in a dynamic graph, has broader applications in robotics, traffic systems, and logistics.
