Unlike general-purpose AI chips, this design bakes the model's structure into the circuitry while still allowing weight updates, targeting 6–10x efficiency gains over Google's current custom AI chips. Deployment is targeted for 2028. The project is partly a response to an internal AI capacity crunch at Google, which has forced Google Cloud to turn away some customers. A startup called Taalas is already pursuing a similar approach with its 'Hardcore' chip. The main tradeoff is rigidity — locking in today's architecture risks obsolescence — but for a company serving one model at massive scale, the efficiency gains could justify the bet.
