The mechanism is a financial tool to sell its TPU chips: Google's guarantee lets data-centre developers borrow cheaply, making projects viable, which in turn drives TPU purchases by tenants like Anthropic. This mirrors a broader trend among hyperscalers using off-balance-sheet structures — residual value guarantees, future lease commitments — to fund AI infrastructure without recording full liabilities. Moody's estimates the five largest US hyperscalers hold $969bn in future lease commitments, with $662bn not yet on any balance sheet. Accounting rules allow these to stay in footnotes as long as renewal isn't 'reasonably certain.' Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, and Nvidia are using similar structures.
