Google's AI Overviews have been presenting entries from the SCP Foundation — a collaborative horror fan-fiction project — as documented fact, with no fiction disclaimer. Futurism identified at least 20 such cases, including one where the AI answered in the first person as a fictional toaster. The issue highlights a broader accuracy problem: while AI Overviews are reportedly ~91% accurate, Google's query volume means millions of wrong answers are served. The concern is that casual or uninformed users may accept AI-generated fiction as reality, especially as Google shifts Search toward an AI-first, answer-focused interface. Some searches have since been corrected, suggesting a quiet partial fix.
