Google DeepMind is undergoing a significant leadership reshuffle: founder Demis Hassabis steps back from day-to-day operations to become chair and Alphabet's chief scientist, while CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu takes over Gemini model development. Simultaneously, four prominent engineers — Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le — are departing to found Discovery Loop, a public-benefit corporation aimed at using AI to automate scientific and engineering research. Google is investing in the startup and will supply cloud infrastructure. The departures follow earlier losses of Noam Shazeer to OpenAI and John Jumper to Anthropic, and Alphabet shares fell over 5% on the news. Discovery Loop's founders argue they want to build specialized research infrastructure differently from Google's product-focused systems.
