Google DeepMind is undergoing a significant leadership reshuffle: founder Demis Hassabis steps back from day-to-day operations to become chair and Alphabet's chief scientist, while CTO Koray Kavukcuoglu takes over Gemini model development. Simultaneously, four prominent engineers — Jeff Dean, Sanjay Ghemawat, Oriol Vinyals, and Quoc Le — are departing to found Discovery Loop, a public-benefit corporation aimed at using AI to automate scientific and engineering research. Google is investing in the startup and will supply cloud infrastructure.
