Mixture-of-Experts models like Qwen3.6-35B-A3B run efficiently enough on older hardware to make the whole thing work without touching Google's cloud. It's a niche project, but it points at something real — the Googlebook's value proposition depends heavily on Gemini being worth the cloud dependency and the premium price. For people who'd rather not have either, the self-hosted path already exists. ## What to watch The autumn launch will be the real test. If OEM partners price these aggressively and Android 17 turns out to be a genuinely good laptop OS, the Googlebook could find an audience. If they come in at MacBook prices with Android app compatibility as the main draw, it'll be a short experiment.
