# GPT-Rosalind-6 System Card Addendum

**[Hacker News](https://daily.dev/sources/hn)** · 1 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

OpenAI offers GPT-Rosalind-6, a reasoning model for biology, drug discovery and translational medicine, through a restricted 'trusted access' program called GPT-Rosalind-6 Research. It uses the same weights as the flagship GPT-6 Astra model but has fewer refusals on dual-use biological queries, while still refusing requests tied to biological weaponization. Access is limited to vetted scientists, institutes, companies and government partners after review of their proposed use, security controls and governance. Under OpenAI's Preparedness Framework, the launch is treated as High capability in the Biological and Chemical domain and as Critical in Cybersecurity, and below High in AI Self-Improvement. Results are compared against the earlier GPT-Rosalind-5.5 where available.

## Questions this post answers

### What is GPT-Rosalind-6 and who can access it?

GPT-Rosalind-6 is OpenAI's frontier reasoning model for biology, drug discovery and translational medicine, offered as 'GPT-Rosalind-6 Research' only to vetted scientists, research institutes, companies and government partners. Applicants undergo review of proposed uses, security controls and governance practices before being granted access, since the model has fewer refusals on dual-use biological queries than standard models.

_Tracking how frontier labs gate risky model capabilities helps teams planning restricted-access deployments, a use case daily.dev surfaces reporting on._

### How does OpenAI rate the risk level of GPT-Rosalind-6 under its Preparedness Framework?

OpenAI classifies GPT-Rosalind-6 as High capability in the Biological and Chemical domain, just below the Critical threshold. It inherits a Critical rating in Cybersecurity and a below-High rating in AI Self-Improvement from its parent model, GPT-6 Astra, since it shares the same underlying weights.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 1 discussion and 86 comments across hackernews (as of 2026-11-02).

**TL;DR:** Much of the discussion drifts away from the bio-specific release itself into model-naming confusion and comparisons between Astra, Sol 6.1 and other OpenAI models, while a smaller but vocal thread is skeptical of both the gatekeeping access model and the premise that LLMs meaningfully accelerate drug discovery.

**Sentiment:** 10% positive · 40% mixed · 50% skeptical

**The case for**

- Some argue the model (or its base, Astra) is genuinely the strongest for research/investigative tasks, dominating cost-efficiency tradeoffs versus other models.
- A few see value in LLMs speeding up ancillary research tasks like writing grants, literature review, and code for analysis even if they don't solve drug discovery itself.

**The pushback**

- Several commenters are skeptical that LLMs address the actual bottleneck in drug discovery, which they say is clinical trials and real-world constraints, not candidate generation.
- Concerns that vetting/access restrictions give a for-profit company undemocratic gatekeeping power over who can use the model.
- Confusion and frustration over OpenAI's inconsistent model naming scheme making it hard to know which model to use.
- Skepticism that this is just a narrative/marketing exercise ('snake oil') rather than a real scientific advance.
- Distrust of using OpenAI products with proprietary data.

**By community**

- hackernews (mixed): Discussion splits between technical tangents about model lineage/naming and more critical threads doubting the bio/drug-discovery value proposition and the ethics of restricted access.

**Hottest debate:** Whether LLMs like this one actually help with drug discovery's real bottlenecks or are overhyped marketing dressed as scientific progress.

**Open questions**

- If it uses the same weights as Astra, what exactly differs besides refusal behavior — just a system prompt?
- How will open-source alternatives survive if governments start treating model weights as munitions?

**Highlights**

> This is just futurism tech bro optimism. Researchers in bioinfomatics that are doing the ML work are already using llms where its helpful, they dont need a specialized model. I'll bet my entire net worth and future lifetime earnings that this model will not continue to get updates a year from now. This idea that LLMs are going to be able to help with drug discovery better than existing ML approaches is a just a lie, I dont think there's a single biotech/bioinfomatics PhD who agrees with you. They are language models!!! Nobody said researchers wont leverage llms to do the boring stuff, but that doesnt speed up the fundamental bottleneck which are clinical studies. We already have great drug candidates, backlogs of them and having llms is not going to enable you to suddenly be able to do more clinical trials!!! These things happen in the real world, with real constraints There is no terminal, there is no compiler, there are no proofs, money is required (loads of it). Regardless of what Trump says, everything is not computer.

> Last I checked machine learning wasnt the bottleneck for drug discovery and where it fits in the research process was largely solved 5+ years ago.. Weren't there already a ton of ML based drug discovery startups that went out of business, or got aquired, not because they werent useful but because they produced more candidates than the industry could use. I dont think I want researchers offloading their thinking to some specialty model after seeing what its done to me and my colleagues in software, it certainly isn't making anyone more competent. It really only enables people to be able to do less novel and lower quality work faster. OpenAI and Anthropic creating these platforms seems mostly just to create narratives around AI that its going to lead to cures for disease, which it wont, but plenty of normies assume it will cure cancer now. Also a bunch tech oligarchs who are equally convinced or 'one-shot' they're going to live forever because of language models lol. Promises of the Fountain of Youth continue to be a time tested tools for snake oil salesmen.

> So how is this different from Astra, if it's the same weights and zero other training has been done? Did they essentially package a system prompt?

> OpenAI naming scheme makes no sense. I get naming is hard but atleast keep it consistent.
