# Grafana 13.3 release: manage variables across dashboards, share findings with Notebooks, a UI refresh, and more

## Summary

Grafana 13.3 adds cross-dashboard variables, letting teams define a variable once and reuse it across dashboards, scoped as either global or folder-level. A new Notebooks feature lets users capture panels, queries and Assistant findings into a single shareable document. The release also brings the biggest visual refresh since Grafana 7, with new themes, softer borders and revised typography, enabled via the grafana.visualDesignRefresh toggle. Grafana Assistant now supports reviewable dashboard plans before building, plus an 'Undo turn' option to revert Assistant edits.

## Questions this post answers

### How do I share a dashboard variable like environment or region across multiple Grafana dashboards?

Grafana 13.3 introduces cross-dashboard variables in public preview, letting you define a variable once and reuse it across dashboards in your organization. You manage them under Dashboards > Variables and scope each as either Global, available to every dashboard, or Folder, available only within the same folder. Enable the grafana.dashboardGlobalVariables feature toggle for self-managed Grafana.

### What is Grafana Notebooks and how does it work?

Notebooks is a Grafana 13.3 public preview feature that lets you capture findings from dashboards, Explore, and Grafana Assistant into a single editable document. You can add panels, pull in Assistant findings, and write observations alongside the data, then save and share the notebook so teammates can follow the investigation. Enable it via the dashboard.notebooks feature toggle in self-managed Grafana.

_Anyone documenting incident investigations can follow observability tooling updates like this on daily.dev._

### Can I undo changes made by Grafana Assistant to a dashboard?

Yes, Grafana 13.3 adds an 'Undo turn' option, generally available in all editions, that restores a dashboard to its previous state after Grafana Assistant makes an edit. If Assistant changed multiple panels in a single request, all those changes can be undone at once, making it safer to experiment with AI-generated layout and visualization changes.

_Developers relying on AI-assisted dashboard editing can keep up with changes like this on daily.dev._

> Shipping the visual refresh behind the grafana.visualDesignRefresh toggle, with a way to switch back, is a considerate way to do it, but it leaves anyone who documents Grafana with two UIs for a while. Plugin authors and teams with internal runbooks may want to hold off on recapturing screenshots and tutorial videos until the new look becomes the default, since this is only the first phase and more changes are coming. In the meantime, noting "classic look" or "refreshed look" in image captions saves readers from thinking they're on the wrong version when the buttons don't match the guide.
