# Granite Switch 4.1.1 — Update models like you update software

## Summary

IBM released Granite Switch 4.1.1, a patch update to its modular Switch architecture for configuring language models with specialized adapters. The release is fully backwards compatible with 4.1 and requires no migration. It includes an updated Granite Speech ASR model supporting multilingual speech-to-text across 10 languages with native punctuation and capitalization, plus an updated Decision adapter in granitelib-core with improved performance on the Jev Decision Index test set. Apart from training the new ASR model and Decision adapter, nothing was recomputed and the base model is untouched. IBM says it is working on an Adapter SDK so developers and third-party providers can build their own adapters.

## Questions this post answers

### What changed in IBM Granite Switch 4.1.1 compared to 4.1?

Granite Switch 4.1.1 is a patch release that is fully backwards compatible with 4.1 and requires no migration. It updates the Granite Speech ASR model to support multilingual speech-to-text across 10 languages with native punctuation and capitalization, and updates the Decision adapter in granitelib-core with improved performance on the Jev Decision Index test set. The base model itself was not recomputed.

_Developers tracking modular LLM releases can follow adapter-based update patterns like this one on daily.dev._

### How does IBM's Granite Switch architecture let you update models without retraining the whole thing?

Granite Switch uses a modular architecture with specialized, cache-efficient adapters that compose on top of an untouched base model. To release an update, only the new adapters, such as the ASR model or Decision adapter, need training; the base model stays fixed, so you simply compose the latest adapters and deploy them.

_Engineers evaluating adapter-based deployment strategies can keep up with architecture patterns like this on daily.dev._
