# Grave improvements: Native crash postmortems via Android tombstones

## Summary

Sentry's Android SDK version 8.30.0 introduces native crash reporting via Android tombstones, leveraging the ApplicationExitInfo API available on Android 12+. Previously, the SDK maintained a fork of libunwindstack (AOSP's platform unwinder) to capture native crashes, which added ~1MiB of binary overhead, lacked Java/Kotlin frame symbolication, only captured the crashing thread, and required ongoing maintenance against a moving AOSP target. Tombstones, generated by Android's own debuggerd, provide full thread coverage, complete Java/Kotlin frame symbolication, and register memory context — all with zero binary overhead for stack tracing. The implementation required significant architectural work: sharing infrastructure with the existing ANR detection integration, deduplicating events between the tombstone path and the NDK signal handler path (correlated by timestamp within a 5-second window), handling session lifecycle coordination, and replacing a protobuf-javalite dependency with a handwritten 30KiB decoder (epitaph) to avoid version conflicts. Android 12+ now represents ~75% of active Android devices, making tombstone support the primary native crash reporting path for most apps.
